What to see in Serralunga d’Alba
Although it is a small village with less than 600 inhabitants, Serralunga d’Alba – where our winery and our farmhouse are located – is a charming place to visit, both for the tranquility of the beautiful hilly landscape dotted with vineyards, for its monuments of significant historical and artistic interest, and for the gastronomic and wine excellence that can be enjoyed here and in the surrounding areas. If you are planning a visit to the Langhe, it is well worth visiting this small but fascinating town in the province of Cuneo.
First of all, you can admire the majestic noble castle perched on the hilltop of Serralunga, an excellently preserved fortress, built in the 14th century by the Falletti family. The fortress – which played a role more in overseeing the surrounding productive activities than in defense – is characterized by its slender lines and consists of three main parts: the palacium (compact and elongated), two towers (one cylindrical and one square), and a small barrel-vaulted chapel, frescoed around the 15th century. The structure became state property in 1949 and was restored around that time. Be sure to visit the Valvassori Hall, which features a splendid coffered ceiling and 15th-century frescoes depicting the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and other religious subjects.
Another point of artistic and architectural interest is the Church of San Sebastiano, built at the end of the 19th century in place of the ancient parish church of San Benigno, which was in ruins, right at the foot of the castle. The building has a single nave, with an altar adorned with a wooden panel depicting saints, and frescoes on the walls painted almost exclusively by the artist from Alba, Fedele Finati (1856 – 1942); the painter Sebastiano Nizza created the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the apse. The church has a simple but charming red brick facade and is very well preserved, definitely worth a visit.
For outdoor enthusiasts, you can take a beautiful walk along the Anello di Serralunga, a nearly 10 km route starting from Piazza Marconi, winding through vineyards and hazelnut groves, continuing on a panoramic path, and then returning to the starting point after passing through several small hamlets surrounded by greenery and the castle itself. A few kilometers from Serralunga, you’ll find the magnificent villages of Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, Grinzane Cavour, and La Morra (just to name the closest), each rich in wonders to discover.
